TFC Playlist 24/1/09-Oz Day Special Part 1

In TFC on January 24, 2009 at 11:46 am

As a certified Australian for the last eighteen years, 2009 is my downunder coming of age. Choosing a country is very different to being chosen by it.  Both experiences are to be celebrated…and so we shall over the next two weekends. On the 31st it’ll be a dinky-di, dead set 100% green and gold bottler.  But this week I though I would celebrate the multicultural side of our country with an “anything but in English” TFC.

Gustav released the aadvarks and mix me an Albury-Wodonga Stinger.

Kotihitanga – Oceania (New Zealand/Aotearoa)

Yeke Yeke – Mory Kante (Guinea)

Siol Ghoraidh – Runrig (Scotland)

Ein Bisschen Frieden – Nicole (Germany)

Jean, Petit Jean – Eurocantica (EU wide choir singing in Jerriais)

O Passo Do Kanguru – Carmen Miranda (Brazil)

In Case You Were Wondering – Welsh roots

This week ICYWW allows me to reveal my celtic side.  The Welsh language music scene has been flourishing four about four decades and was crucial in the revival that has seen Y Gymraeg back from the brink. Songs were often political and a bit radical.  Now the scene in Wales is a little more mellow and/or bland! Still Cerys Mathews, Duffy, Super Furry Animals and the Stereophonics probably wouldn’t be around WITHOUT the scene that grew from the language movement.

Tro fi ‘mlaen – Diffiniad

Lleucu Llwyd – DJ SG

Smo Fi Ishe Mynd – Edward H Dafis

The first Welsh super group.

Dawnsionara – Endaf Emlyn

Never heard of him ? Tragic as he is a great songwriter who blended his native language with some sophisticated influences to produce an original voice.

W Capten – Geraint Griffiths

A computer sings to a space ships captain – fab!

And for a Cymric-Australian combo try this!!! A blog extra with extra sprinkles.

C’est Si Bon – Eartha Kitt (US)

Piove (Ciao, Ciao Bambina) – Domenico Modugno (Italy)

A Eurovision classic

Mara Nisa Swing – Triton (Mauritius)

Refazenda – Gilberto Gil (Brazil)

N’sel Fik – Chaba Fadela & Cheb Sahraoui (Algeria)

Montras – Mariza (Portugal)

Bachianas Brasileiras #5 (Aria) – Gli Scapoli (Norway)

Mbo Hahita Avao – D’Gary & Jihe (Madagascar)

Un Jour, Un Enfant – Frida Boccara

Sexy Boy – AIR (France)
