A long weekend Saturday and what a fab way to spend it. Footy in the arvo at the wonderfully real North Port Oval, then stuff and nonsense with the weekly wireless thingo. Here’s what you may or may not have heard with some value-adding! And don’t forget to have a look at the TFC Link of the Day page. There are some belters there at the moment…
And now the moment you’ve all been waiting for…
That Mellow Saxophone – Roy Montrell
You Sexy Thing – Hot Chocolate
The New Ashmolean – Johnny Mercer
Almost Like Being In Love/This Can’t Be Love – Rufus Wainwright
Turning Japanese – The Vapors
Car Handcuffs – Steve Martin
Before he made good movies then very crappy movies, Steve Martin was the “wild & crazy guy” who was a comedy sensation. This track is a reminder of that talent.
Musical Cabbage #2 The Ting Tings
The Ting Tings are Katie White and Jules De Martino. They say they’re members of “an unintentional band”. Katie and Julesbring a splendid irreverence to contemporary music. As I said the other week on-air, if anyone doubts that wit no longer exists in music they should listen to this lot! They say they love making music and it certainly shines through.
This is what Katie said of the group’s style: “A few people have mentioned the childlike, singalong quality in our songs. I think it’s because my voice isn’t too high or too low, and the lyrics have that chanty quality, so anyone can sing along to them. Or maybe we’ve just got the brains of four-year-olds!” The Ting Tings The Ting Tings were voted #3 on the BBC’s ‘Top 10 To Watch In 2008’ and they are still on the way up. Hear them playing a live set for US public radio.

The Nearness Of You – Norah Jones
My Funny Valentine – Chet Baker
Progress – John O’May, Martin Croft & Mark Jones
Here Comes The Sun – Melbourne Gay & Lesbian Youth Chorus

Sexy and very funny kiwis…I love them. The song is spot on and the theme is a familiar one to anyone who has spent the odd half a lifetime in bars! Watch the video here
Right Back Where We Started From – Maxine Nightingale
Gwyliwch Y Ferch – Sian James
A sultry number with the full orchestral works. Doesn’t matter what the lingo is: a good song is a good song! This is a folk song with a big band/film noir treatment – magnificent/gwych
Into The Valley – The Skids
Scots punks from Dunfermline…ah the late 70s and early 80s!
Red River Valley – Garrison Keilor & Jearlyn Steele

Bet She’s Not Your Girlfriend – Pet Shop Boys
Midnight – Fargetta
