Almost on the runway, but on my last day in the emerald city I would like to bring people’s notice to a worrying phenomenon.
In my limited travels around the inner-west (Alexandria, Erskineville) and inner-east (Darlo) I have seen FIVE locked and shuttered pubs. Two of them, the Newtown and the Imperial, were major GLBTI haunts. There is talk of re-development plans, but they would say that wouldn’t they.
Is this a sign of economic downturn or community weakening ? The “local” is a talisman of a locality and it’s in a bit of strife. True, smaller, Melbourne-esque bars are beginning to pop up in the Sydney inner suburbs, but they don’t anchor a place like an Aussie pub.
