Will no one rid me of these meddlesome politicians

“What are your thoughts on legalising civil unions for same-sex couples and legally recognising same-sex co-parenting from conception?

That was a question that was finally put to Julia Gillard.  It came at Wednesday night’s town hall forum.

It got past her oft-repeated opposition to same-sex marriage and put her on the spot about a possible parallel set up – Civil Unions.

I know a lot of people reject CUs, but they are a whole lot better than a raft of amendments to existing legislation that guarantee equality.  Try waiving pages of Hansard about when you are in the emergency room and want to be by your loved one’s bedside.

Anyhow, what was La Gillard’s thoughtful response ? A repetition of her marriage stance and some blather about the states.

No vision.  No dreams.  Just process.

Here was a chance to both propose something much better than the status quo and to take the marriage debate to the next level.  That’s how change comes.

Not in Australia in 2010 it seems.

“You campaign in poetry. You govern in prose.”

That’s what Mario Cuomo, former Democratic Governor of New York, once said.

If this campaign has been poetry, god help us when the prose of the next government, whether Labor or the Coalition,  comes to be written.
